It accurately predicted just about everything.

I have read the book but also watched the movie over 50 times. Each time I find something I missed. One thing everyone agrees on is the horrible ending. In short down right depressing. The Abbot caves into Rome and ends the Latin mass, we also find out Father Abbot has lost his faith and lost the ability to pray. If they ever remake the movie I would prefer the following ending.

Father Abbot and Father Kinsella were just wrapping up discussions about whether or not the Latin mass would continue in Muck Abbey. “Don’t worry Father Kinsella, you will have your answer on the mass in the morning. The last thing I want to do is hold up a go getter like yourself, I’ll pick you up at 8am plenty of time for your helecopter ride back to the mainland before the storm”. “Grand, Father Abbot” Kinsella said almost relieved he would get his answer for Father General in Rome. “MARTIN! Take Father Kinsella to his quarters, and bring a torch along, he is not a night owl like you”. Father Kinsella smiled and he and Brother Martin headed out to Kinsella’s quarters at the guest house.

Passing the Abbey radio room the walk was interrupted by Brother Kevin, the operator. “Fr. Kinsella? Telephone for you”. Brother Martin made the introductions, “Father Kinsella, this is Brother Martin who operates our radio, Brother Martin this is Father Kinsella”. Brother Kevin then assured Brother Martin that he would take Father Kinsella to his quarters and that Brother Martin was relieved of his duties.

Kinsella picked up the phone and heard a crackly voice at the other end. It was the helicopter pilot from Dingle. “Father there is a hell of a storm brewing, if you don’t leave early tomorrow you might be stuck there for days!”. “I see” replied Kinsella “Look if I call you first thing can you still take me to the mainland?”. “I can Father, but the earlier the better”. Kinsella thanked the pilot and hung up.

Brother Kevin folded his arms into the sleeves of his habit and staring at Kinsella said, “you look like right little soldier boy, do priests from Rome not dress like priests from Rome anymore. Kinsella apparently looked caught off guard and said, “oh, no, only for ceremonial purposes”. Brother Kevin then went on, “Tell me is it true that in South America priest are over throwing their governments”. “Yes! Priests our age are dieing to improve peoples secular lives…………are you interested in this?”. “If I wanted to join the IRA I would of joined the IRA, instead I joined the church. People don’t want your kind of faith, they want someone to baptize them, to marry them to bury them. The old parish priest knew that you don’t. They want the mass, the true mass, in Latin. Priest like you are ruining the church in my opinion”. An angry Fr. Kinsella responded, “Well what do you know about this brother, your stuck here on this God forsaken island………………..”. A eerie silence then engulfed both men. “Come along Father, said Brother Kevin, I’ll take you to your quarters.”

Passing the chapel were the muffled sounds of prayers being said in Latin. Kinsella asked what those sounds were. Brother Kevin responded with, “Its some of the monks, we are praying all night to save the mass”. “I see” said Kinsella thinking to himself, go ahead and pray you stupid fools. I alone have the power to change things here. Kinsella then told Kevin he could find his way to his quarters from there and relieved Brother Kevin from his obligation. Kinsella then doubled back into the church and snuck inside just in time to see Fr, Matthew, red beard as he called him step inside.

However from another part of the chapel in the dark shadows Kinsella heard the voice of Fr. Abbot. “Matthew, I thought you would be behind this, you continue to ignore your vow of obedience. I told you no disruptions while our visitor was in our midst.” Kinsella listening rather enjoyed the berating Fr. Matthew, redbeard as he called him, was getting.

Out of nowhere Kinsella caught the whiff of rose petals. He was not sure but thought the smell was coming from the area around where the monstrance was containing the blessed sacrament. Strange he thought, there are no flowers anywhere in this room. Out of the corner of his eye Father abbot thought he saw smoke from around the the monstrance. What he saw and thought was smoke was a iridescent cloud that increasingly grew in size. Then out of the cloud stepped a women dressed in white who was more brilliant than the sun.

Father Manus was the closest one to the monstrance with his arms outstretched deep in prayer and eyes closed. The light emitted from the women was so bright, it caused him to open his eyes. Once he saw the vision he became frightened and crept away. The other monks in the room saw the vision as well all shivering in fear. Father Matthew and Father Abbot dropped to their knees. For the first time Father Abbot began to pray from the heart. He began in strong voice, “Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name” at which point Matthew joined in with “give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil”. In the corner of the room Fr. Kinsella laid prostrate, weeping.

The beautiful Lady introduced herself as the immaculate conception, the mother of God. She said, “My son is saddened by the destruction brought upon his church by those influenced by the evil one. He is pleased with your efforts to restore the true mass and wishes you to continue to restore the true faith as he told St. Francis to restore his church. In so doing the wishes of my Son you will so forever be under my protection. The holy mass of my son will never be put under, rather it will grow and flourish. So take heart my children and do not dispair.

Kinsella was still in the corner sobbing saying, “Forgive me holy Mother, I willingly conspired with the evil one against your son’s church, Forgive me!” Our Lady then gave a loving smile to all in the room and ascended into the heavens.

Two days later in Rome, an Albanesian monk clad in his traditional hooded habit appeared at Father Generals office. “James? is that you?” Father General asked. “It is Father General, I wish to spend the rest of my life on Mork island with the monks leading a monastic life. I wish to learn the old Latin mass and minister to the people and not purse my own secular pursuits. There will be no letter of submission from the monks, only new zeal for the cause.

Father General turned pail, almost white and sank into his chair. “What has this wild eyed old crazy monk done to you James? What spell has he put on you?”. “Non Father General, it, ….. it…..it was Our Lady the Mother of God. She appeared, in the chapel, in front of the monks. She told us to be like St. Francis and restore her son’s church.”. “James you fool, this is not over, that mass must never be allowed to survive, you have just thrown away a brilliant career, go, I won’t stop you, go and join your hallucinating monks. I won’t stop you! But again I warn you, this is not over, excommunication will most certainly be in store for you”. Said Fr General in a harsh tone. “In that case then Fr. General, his will be done”.

The go to rally movie for all traditional Latin mass Catholics will always be the Movie “The Catholics” a made for T.V. movie that goes back to 1973 and seemed to hit the nail on the head with all the problems we are facing today in the church thanks to…

[1

post-34219","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
